Rio Tinto Alcan (RTA) built a demonstration plant at its Complexe Jonquière site in Québec, Canada to test and continue developing its proprietary AP60 smelting technology, the most modern aluminum reduction technology developed to date.
The complete project will be delivered in three phases. This first phase is a pilot plant with 38 pots expected to produce approximately 60,000 tons per annum (tpa) of aluminum. The pilot plant includes a gas treatment center, 2 pot tending machines, a casting crane, a raw material handling system, a rod shop, a casting area producing 700kg air-cooled sows, the complete power substation and water treatment units. This facility will become the development center for future generations of AP60 technology. Once all phases completed, the total 272 cells will produce 460,000 tpa.
Working with the SLH EPCM team, Progesys offered its expertise in the planning and execution of POV and commissioning. Progesys’ early involvement during the engineering phase helped align engineering and construction activities with commissioning and start-up phases.
