Domtar’s Windsor Mill woodroom upgrade cuts fiber loss and increases productivity

Domtar is the largest integrated manufacturer and marketer of uncoated freesheet paper in North America, and one of the largest manufacturers of pulp in the world. The company counts on a network of 13 pulp and paper mills and 11 manufacturing and converting facilities which gives them approximately 2.7 million tons of papermaking capacity as well as 1.5 million air-dried metric tons (ADMT) of market pulp capacity annually.

Domtar contracted Progesys for construction management and commissioning in an integrated team model. The Windsor Mill Woodroom modernization project consists of the demolition of one of the two-chip production lines, the installation of the new rotary debarker, and the horizontal chipper processing system. During the dismantling, demolition, and construction phases, the second line, present in the same building, continued to operate to maintain a maximum production capacity. The combined demolition and construction phases required 10 months including the installation of the structure around debarker infeed, the installation of deck and loader system, the mechanical modifications as well as the electrical and instrument works.
